Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters
Yugi Muto is a shy 10th grader - at least he was until he solved the Millennium Puzzle and released the spirit of Atemu, the Ancient Pharaoh! Now, when Yugi's in trouble, Atemu is always there to step in!
The spirit of an ancient Pharaoh, Atemu lives within the Millennium Puzzle. He has no physical form of his own, and therefore must share one with Yugi. If Atemu wishes to take over Yugi's body, the body will morph to look more like him. During the ceremonial battle, the egyptian gods give Atemu a body of his own which he uses to face Yugi. After he loses the duel, he returns to the world of the afterlife for evermore.
Grandpa means the world to Yugi, and is captured by Yugi's enemies in practically every season. In the 1960's, he discovered the Millennium Puzzle in the tomb of Atemu, and passed it onto Yugi when he was eight.
Kaiba is considered to be the most powerful duelist in the world. He is undefeated in a duel except for one defeat by Yugi Muto. Kaiba doesn't exactly hate Yugi, but he doesn't consider him a friend and doesn't believe in the power of Yugi's Millenium Puzzle. He posseses three Blue-Eyes White Dragons, which is amazing when you consider that there are only four in the world! He duels for his brother Mokuba, who always looks up to him.
Mokuba is Seto Kaiba's little brother, and he does not see Seto as the cold-hearted, power-hungry person that other people see. Seto pledged to protect Mokuba after their parents died. They spent most of their lives in a orphanage when they were little. Mokuba looks up to Seto and sticks by his side no matter what. Seto has never failed to try and save Mokuba or risk his life for him.
Joey started out as a rough, tough kid trying to survive the mean streets. He even he bullied Yugi a bit because he was younger and took a piece of Yugi's yet-to-be-complete Millenium Puzzle. But when Yugi tried to protect him and Tristan from Ushio at cost of his well-being, Joey gave Yugi back the final puzzle piece and the two became friends after that.
Ryou Bakura would probably never have even entered into the scene, were it not for an odd compulsion that drives him to seek out the Millennium Items. He's drawn to the Duelist Kingdom from the combined influence of Pegasus' Millennium Eye and Yugi's Millennium Puzzle. His Millennium Ring houses an evil spirit of the Thief King Bakura, the Pharaoh's arch enemy from the ancient past.
5000 years ago, give or take a day, an evil beast known as Zorc, creator of the Shadow Realm rampaged throughout Egypt. The Pharaoh sealed him away into the shadows from whence he came, but Zorc still had one more trick up his sleeve. He found himself a lonely tomb robber named Bakura and imprisoned a small piece of his soul within him, and the rest was trapped forever within the Millennium Items. The lonely tomb robber became known as many things, mainly Thief King Bakura (or my personal favorite: Bakura, Tomb Raider), and has one mission - to retrieve the Millennium Items, return to the ancient past, transform back into Zorc, and try again!
Téa is a childhood friend of Yugi. She cares a lot for her friends and tells them not to give up hope. She helps Yugi a lot too. She went out on a date with Yami Yugi (to help find out about his past), and fought Mai for starchips so that Yugi could get inside Pegasus Castle. It is mentioned in the Yu-Gi-Oh! PlayStation game that she is the reincarnation of Teana, who lived in Ancient Egypt, but this is not said in the Anime. In the anime however, Mana possesses a pet bird known as Anzu.
Tristan Taylor has been friends with Yugi for as long as his pal Joey. Though Tristan and Joey fight constantly, they are always there to cover each other's back. He is sometimes quick to panic but first to stand up and help when a friend is in need. He doesn't duel like his friends, but is head over heels for Serenity, Joey's little sister, and pretended to have tought Joey how to duel to impress her. Joey can get a little annoyed because Tristan bugs him about his sister, but he really cares for her. Though Joey is the joker of the group... Tristan is both funny and smart. The gang would not be the same without him.
When we first encounter Mai Valentine, she's a conceited, laugh-your-head-off duelist who's out for number one: herself. She's endlessly bragging and always trash talking, and she sometimes employs mind games to psych her opponent's out. She enters the Duelist Kingdom tournament strictly for the money at first, but the course of events there will drastically change her outlook.
Maximillon Pegasus is the creater of Duel Monsters. He used to posess the all-powerful Millenium Eye, before it was stolen by Yami Bakura. He duels for his dead wife, Cecelia, and attempts to restore her soul to this world using the magic of the Millenium Items. He set up the Duelist Kingdom tournament in an attempt to steal Yugi's Millenium Puzzle. He has also made attempts to take control of the Millenium Ring, but evil Bakura stole his Millenium Eye before he had a chance to do so. Following the tournament he disappeared without a trace. He was seen again in the Orichalcos Saga without his Millenium Eye, but also made a cameo appearance in Yu-gi-oh! The Movie.
Marik was brought up learning the teachings of the ancient writings and of the Pharaoh, but he was reluctant to give up his freedom. Then, when Marik's father ritualistically carved the Pharaoh's story into Marik's back, Marik's anger peaked, and did not fade, as if Marik was now "infused with an evil entity."
Ishizu's family have been the tombkeepers to the Pharaoh for thousands of years. The latest generation, Marik and herself now hold this responsibility. However, due to Marik's plans for world domination, it is up to her and her millenium necklace to stop him. She gives Kaiba Obelisk the Tormenter in hopes of luring her brother to the Battle City Tournament and putting an end to his evil ways. She also as acts a link to the past, by relaying key information to both Yugi and Seto Kaiba, with regards to their past lives and their role in the saving of the world.
Rebecca is the granddaughter of Arthur Hopkins, a professor who was friends with Yugi's grandfather years ago while exploring the ancient Egyptian ruins. Arthur had given Grandpa his Blue-Eyes White Dragon card as a symbol of their friendship, but Rebecca is under the assumption that the card was stolen from her grandfather. However, it appears that friendship later turns into a crush as Yugi later meets Rebecca during the DOOM arc as Rebecca refers to him as 'darling' and is constantly hanging around him wherever he goes causing Tea to get very jealous. We last see her give a goodbye hug to Yugi as he departs from America, and a final humorous scene of Tea's jealousy being shown as she breaks up the hug Rebecca gives to Yugi.
SEASON 1 SEASON 2 SEASON 3
Syrus is the weaker younger brother of Zane Truesdale, who is in the Obelisk Blue dormitory. He himself joined as a student in the Slifer Red dormitory along with Chumley Huffington and the main character, Jaden Yuki. He is a decent duelist, but has a great deal of self doubt, hindering his performance. He is later promoted to the Ra Yellow dorm after he defeats Ran, an Obelisk Blue student, in a duel. He was meant to spend his third year in Obelisk Blue after gaining a high score on his end of year exams the year before, but decided not to remain there.
Alexis is a strong female duelist from the Obelisk Blue dormitory at Duel Academia; Alexis, along with Zane Truesdale and Chazz Princeton, is in the best dormitory of the academy. She is regarded as the queen of Obelisk Blue, yet she does not follow the crowd nor does she regard herself as better than other people.
Think of Yu-gi-oh! GX as Harry Potter - You have Jaden (Harry), Syrus (Ron), Alexis (Hermione) and Chazz (Malfoy). Dr. Crowler? He's the Severus Snape of Yu-gi-oh! GX. The one teacher who picks his favorites among the students and picks on the others. He believes that only the extremely skilled duelists should be students, and he is always trying to find ways to get Jaden expelled. Oh and he has a PHD in dueling and hates Cats.
As I mentioned before, Chazz is the Draco Malfoy of Yu-gi-oh! GX. He is jealous of Jaden ever since he saw his performance in the entrance exam (clearly better than his performance) and will stop at nothing to prove he is capable of beating Jaden. Originally in Obelisk Blue, he temporarily transferred to North Academy for several episodes (and became Jaden Yuki's opponent in the annual "School Duel") but transferred back to Duel Academy following this. Under this technicality, he was forced into Slifer Red (as students joining mid-year cannot take an entrance exam and must "start from the bottom"), much to his dismay, and has remained there ever since.
Duel Academy has had hundreds of amazing duelists residing on its campus, but none as highly superior as Zane Truesdale. Zane was one of the most highly respected and top ranked duelists at Duel Academy. He is also the only person whom Jaden has been unable to defeat, although he came close in "Graduation Match", with the duel ending in a tie. After being beaten for the first time by Aster Phoenix, Zane lost all faith in his dueling skills and became the worst player in the league, before a brief but intense stint in the illegal "Underground duelist" leagues (a result of his desperation). Following this, he regained his old skills, but became a different Zane - a cold, heartless duelist who abandoned any respet he had for his cards. Then, he disappeared.
Bastian Misawa was the strongest duelist in Ra Yellow, and considers himself one of Jaden's closest friends. Although Jaden feels the same way, Jaden is sure that he is stronger than Bastian. In Season 2, Bastion became a follower of the light, but was freed after his love of science made him remember his old life and break the curse, in a similar way that Chazz was freed. After this, he ran off with his mentor and disappeared without a trace. In Season 3, after Jaden and the gang were transported to another dimension, it is revealed that Bastion was also trapped there after an experiment went wrong, and was able to use his intellect to assist the gang's return to the real world.
Tyranno Hassleberry was first depicted as a bully who picked on Jaden and his friends, despite being a year younger than them! He thought he was unbeatable, but when Jaden disproved that theory, he came to idolize Jaden, even taking to sleeping in the same room as him at the Slifer Red dorm, despite being in Ra. He is the son of a great army general, and therefore likes to pretend he is in the army, referring to his dorm as "The Yellow Barracks" and speaking with a sterotypical texan accent. He and Syrus often fight over who is a better friend of Jaden. He is a dinosaur duelist, and his favorite movie is Jurassic Park, as he can be seen wearing a Jurassic Park T-shirt in various flashbacks.
Atticus is Alexis' brother. A great duelist and a babe magnet, he's always there for anyone who needs him, especially his sister. He went missing before Alexis' came to Duel Academy. He was revealed to have been taken in by Kagemaru and brainwashed into becoming a Shadow Rider known as Nightshroud. After Jaden defeats him, he returns to normal, but briefly reprises this role in Season 2. He studies at the same level as his sister, despite being a year older, since he missed a year when taken by the Shadow Riders.
Not much is known about Sartorious. He has a knack for reading Tarot cards and is believed to be the leader of the Society of Light (White Organisation in Japanese).
Aster Phoenix is a child prodigy. One year younger than Jaden, he has accomplished much in his 15 years of life. Not only is he a sporting legend, but his also has two PHD's! He is a good friend of Jaden when he comes to the school (at least it seems that way), but their views of duelling differ highly. Whilst Jaden believes that the thrill of duelling comes from the luck of the draw, and never knowing what's going to happen next, Aster believes that our future is set and that our destiny is written, hence the Destiny Heroes he uses. Although his story is resolved in Season 2, he becomes a recurring character and makes occasional appearances.
Jesse Anderson is an exchange student from Duel Academy during Season 3. He is considered the Jaden of the north, posessing his enthusiasm towards dueling, carefree attitude, heroic personality and ability to see duel spirits. After the academy is sent to another dimension, Jesse is taken with them and assists Jaden and the gang in finding their way home. Although not clear at first, Jesse plays a large part in Jaden's character development; after he is sacrificed to Yubel so that the gang can return home, Jaden blames himself due to Yubel being his monster. This trauma plays a large part in Jaden's growing up.
Axel Brodie began his life at Duel Academy as an exchange student from it's western franchise. He was originally the right hand man of Professor Thelonius Viper, but after Viper revealed his true intentions, he began assisting Jaden and the gang when they were trapped in the other dimension, as well as when they returned to find Jesse. Growing up, Axel trained with his mercenary father and now applies these techniques to dueling, claiming that the reason he duels so well is because he has trained his mind to duel as if his life depended on it. This mercenary background is reflected in his Volcanic Burn deck and unique Duel Disk (possibly of his own design) that takes on the appearance of a hand-held cannon when in standby.
An exchange student from Duel Academy's south branch down under, Jim "Crocodile" Cook is the stereotypical Australian, reflected in his accent, his boomerang-like Duel Disk and the crocodile he carries on his back. He accompanies the gang to the alternate dimension, and is one of the few who do not become "Duel Ghouls", despite being seldom-seen throughout the ordeal. Of all the exchange students, he has been seen the least, but begins to play a vital role in the plot once the true nature of the situation reveals itself.
Yubel is the primary antagonist of the third season, though not actually revealed to be so until late in the season. Until then, she begins as the mysterious voice that haunts Jaden in his sleep from below the academy. She then manages to posess Marcel, the french friend of Blair and uses this human appearance to fight on her own behalf. Using Marcel's body, she takes Duel Academy to the alternate dimension where enough energy is gathered by her in her duel with Jaden (especially due to the large energy generated by the Sacred Beasts, which she unearthed from their resting place) for him to discard Marcel's body and personify herself in a physical form, revealing her true identity to Jaden and continuing her rampage to the extreme.
Yusei Fudo is the main character of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. He is what is known as a "Duel Rider", a rare kind of duelist. He also commands a red "D-Wheel", which it can be presumed is the futuristic red motorcycle he rides, which also doubles as a Duel Disk. He is known for his cool and yet Yugi-esque seriousness, and his intillectual genius both in and out of duels. The first known character to utilize the new Tunor and Synchro, his signature card is "Stardust Dragon", which will be released in the new "Duelist Genesis" booster, the first in the sixth series of booster packs.
Jack Atlas is the main antagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, being extremely Kaiba-like in both appearance and attitude. He has the title of "King" of the riding duels, and it can therefore be assumed that his Kaiba-like tendancies continue into the world of dueling. Although his exact nature is unknown, he is pictured in certain promotional art with a monster similar to Yusei's. However, despite his skill, he fears Yusei's genius, it having crushed everything in Yusei's path.
Aki Izayoi is the female of the group, and possibly Yusei's love interest. What makes her so special is the "special power" she possesses, which seems to be a form of ESP. Although what it actually is is unknown, it is activated only by sadness and anguish, which has ironically caused her a lot of anguish. However, meeting Yusei changes things...
Rua and Ruka are a pair of twins who join Yusei and Aki, completing the traditional four-member group. While Rua is the lively, excentric and blundering brother, Ruka is the calm and collected sister. They both support Yusei in duels and have been known to "make fun of fate".
